Our main objective at Safina Empowerment Organization is to empower communities in Kenya’s Rift Valley and Nairobi provinces by uplifting the lives of women and girls. we aim to create a just, sustainable, and inclusive society where women and girls lead the way towards a brighter future.

Safina Empowerment in Kenya stands at the intersection of gender justice, digital skills empowerment, social justice, and environmental stewardship. As a national NGO, our commitment is to dismantle oppressive systems, centering the global majority, including women, LGBTQ communities, and those from working-class backgrounds.

Through impactful programs, our light-framed, non-extractive curriculum nurtures collective liberation, empowering communities in the Rift Valley and Nairobi provinces.

Environmental justice is ingrained in our efforts, as we safeguard our planet for a brighter tomorrow.

CLIMATE

Problem
In the face of climate disasters, women bear a disproportionate burden and yet possess immense potential to drive the transformation needed to combat global warming. Alarming statistics reveal that women constitute 80% of the world's climate refugees and are 14 times more likely to succumb to climate-related disasters than men. The aftermath of climate crises inflicts severe health, economic, and social consequences on women, from toxic smoke exposure during fires that affects unborn children to sexual violence and trafficking during climate-induced displacement. Indigenous women and women of color bear the brunt of these consequences, making their empowerment pivotal in addressing the climate crisis. Research underscores the potential for women's education, leadership, and empowerment to lead to a substantial reduction of atmospheric CO2, presenting a crucial solution to reverse global warming.
Solution
At Safina Empowerment, we are dedicated to empowering women as climate leaders, igniting a transformative wave of environmental stewardship and resilience in the South Rift region of Kenya. Our vision encompasses implementing climate education and empowerment programs in girls' schools and high schools within our program area. As part of our climate initiative, we have already launched a tree-planting program in Tenwek High School, fostering a culture of environmental consciousness among students. Our aim is to expand these programs, reaching out to more girls' schools and high schools in the South Rift. Through these initiatives, we aim to nurture a generation of climate leaders, instilling a deep sense of responsibility towards the environment and fostering sustainable practices. By focusing on educational institutions, we aim to equip young minds with the knowledge and tools to tackle climate challenges effectively.
Through interactive sessions and hands-on experiences, students will gain a profound understanding of the impact of climate change and the importance of environmental preservation. Safina Empowerment stands committed to empowering women and girls in the South Rift region to be catalysts of change, leading their communities towards a future of climate resilience and environmental sustainability. WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

Problem
In the scenic landscapes of Kenya's Rift Valley, marginalized families, often grappling with extreme poverty, face daunting challenges in breaking free from the cycle of deprivation. Women, as the bedrock of these families, bear the weight of their economic struggles. Many families lack the necessary capital to invest in ventures that could uplift them from poverty and create sustainable livelihoods. Safina Empowerment recognizes this urgent need for transformative solutions. We have witnessed the plight of very poor families in the region, whose potential remains untapped due to the lack of resources and opportunities.
Solution
At Safina Empowerment, we are on a mission to uplift these marginalized families, providing them with the vital lifeline they need to overcome poverty and emerge as drivers of change. Through targeted direct cash transfers, we infuse capital into the hands of these families, offering not just income but also the opportunity to invest in ventures that can steer them towards economic prosperity. These cash transfers serve as catalysts, empowering families to establish microenterprises, engage in income-generating activities, and access education and training. One of our transformative initiatives is the implementation of table banking systems, supported through these direct cash transfers.
Women are equipped with financial knowledge and insight, fostering a culture of saving and investment within their communities. This creates a supportive network where women can pool resources, access capital, and drive local economic growth. Moreover, Safina Empowerment extends its impact beyond direct cash transfers. By providing smartphones to families through their mothers, we bridge the digital divide and ensure that children have access to the technology they need for education and growth. Our vision encompasses the holistic empowerment of families, equipping them with tools and opportunities to thrive in an ever-changing world. FOOD & AGRICULTURE

Problem
In Kenya's Rift Valley and Nairobi provinces, women play a pivotal role as farmers, contributing significantly to the nation's food production. However, they face a challenging reality where ownership of agricultural land and control over farm resources are disproportionately skewed against them. The lack of access to resources and limited control over profits hampers agricultural productivity, exacerbating food insecurity, poverty, and inadequate natural resource management. Safina Empowerment recognizes that to harness the true potential of agriculture in Kenya, women farmers must be granted equal rights and access to agricultural resources.
Solution
At Safina Empowerment, we aim to catalyze a transformation in the agricultural landscape of Kenya's Rift Valley and Nairobi. Our vision centers on empowering women farmers through targeted initiatives, designed to bridge the gender disparity in agricultural access and control. Through our planned agricultural programs, we target direct cash transfers to women farmers, specifically advising them to invest in agriculture to enhance productivity and economic growth. We intend to follow up diligently with these women, evaluating their investments, and rewarding prudent decisions with additional funds.
This approach not only bolsters food production but also empowers women as key contributors to sustainable agriculture and economic growth. In partnership with organizations like Haki Nawiri, we aspire to source indigenous and resilient seeds, strengthening crop diversity and enhancing agricultural resilience. Collaborating with local communities, we seek to promote climate-smart and inclusive agricultural policies that safeguard the environment and elevate the livelihoods of women farmers in Kenya. Through our planned Seeds of Resilience Initiative, we envision a future where native seeds replace industrial varieties, leading to greater biodiversity and improved economic and food security. By cultivating women's seed collectives, we aim to foster a sense of community and empower women to lead the way towards agricultural sustainability. DIGITAL SKILLS EMPOWERMENT

Problem
In Kenya's Rift Valley and Nairobi, women and girls from marginalized communities face formidable barriers in accessing digital skills education. Limited resources, illiteracy, and the lack of access to technology widen the digital divide, leaving them on the sidelines of the rapidly evolving digital age. As the world advances in technology, these women and girls risk being left behind, hampering their ability to thrive in an interconnected world. Safina Empowerment recognizes the urgency to empower these underserved communities with digital literacy and skills to unleash their potential and participate in the digital revolution.
Solution
At Safina Empowerment, we aim to ignite a transformative change by empowering poor and illiterate women and girls in Kenya's Rift Valley and Nairobi with essential digital skills. Our vision revolves around providing them with the tools and knowledge to navigate the digital landscape confidently. Through targeted programs, we aim to distribute smartphones to women and girls, bridging the digital divide and granting them access to invaluable educational resources and opportunities. These smartphones will serve as gateways to digital learning platforms and information, empowering them to explore new horizons. To further our mission, we plan to conduct digital skills training workshops tailored to the needs of these underserved communities.
The training sessions will focus on essential digital literacy, such as using computers, navigating the internet, and leveraging digital tools for communication and learning. We aspire to forge partnerships with schools in the Rift Valley and Nairobi, working collaboratively to support the integration of free computers and digital resources for these women and girls. By engaging with schools, we aim to create a conducive learning environment where digital skills are accessible to all, irrespective of their economic background or literacy level."
